- Stage 1 — Pre-Installation Survey & Subfloor Assessment
Before a single board is laid, our installation team assesses your subfloor thoroughly:
- Levelness check — subfloor must be within acceptable levelness tolerances for the flooring type being installed. Uneven subfloors are identified and leveling compound is applied where required before installation begins
- Moisture check — particularly important for ground floor installations and concrete subfloors. Excessive moisture in the subfloor can cause laminate flooring to swell, buckle, and fail prematurely. Where moisture is detected, appropriate moisture barriers or treatment are applied
- Cleanliness — the subfloor must be clean, dry, and free from dust, debris, adhesive residue, and any existing floor covering that may affect the new installation
Structural integrity — any loose, damaged, or hollow sections of the subfloor are identified and addressed before installation proceeds
- Stage 2 — Product Acclimatization
Wooden and laminate flooring products need time to acclimatize to the temperature and humidity of the room in which they will be installed. Fitting flooring before it has properly acclimatized can result in expansion or contraction after installation — causing gaps or buckling. Our team follows the correct acclimatization period for each product type before commencing installation.
- Stage 3 — Underlay Installation
Underlay is the unsung hero of a great flooring installation. It provides cushioning underfoot, sound insulation, moisture protection, and helps bridge minor subfloor imperfections. We select and install the correct underlay specification for your flooring type — whether standard foam underlay, combination underlay with damp proof membrane, or specialist acoustic underlay for apartments and upper floors.
- Stage 4 — Layout Planning
Before laying the first board, our team plans the layout carefully:
- Determining the correct starting wall and direction of installation relative to the room’s main light source and longest dimension
- Planning the layout to ensure balanced cuts at both ends of the room — avoiding very narrow strips at walls that look unprofessional
- For herringbone and other pattern installations, establishing the center point of the room and working outward symmetrically
- Marking expansion gap requirements at all walls, doorframes, and fixed obstacles
- Stage 5 — Flooring Installation
With preparation complete, installation begins — methodically, row by row, with careful attention to:
- Correct click-lock or tongue-and-groove engagement between boards
- Staggered end joints between rows for structural integrity and visual balance
- Consistent expansion gaps maintained at all perimeter walls using spacers
- Careful cutting around doorframes, pipes, vents, and irregular wall shapes
- Pattern alignment for herringbone and multi-strip installations
- Regular checks for level and alignment as installation progresses
- Stage 6 — Transition & Accessory Fitting

Yes. The installation area should be cleared of furniture and personal belongings before our team arrives. For large furniture items that are difficult to move, please discuss this with us when booking and we will advise on the best approach
In some cases, yes — depending on the condition, height, and type of existing floor covering. Our team assesses the existing floor during the pre-installation survey and advises on whether overlay installation is appropriate or whether removal of the existing floor covering is recommended. Removal of existing flooring may incur an additional charge.
Uneven subfloors must be leveled before flooring installation to ensure a flat, stable result. Our team uses leveling compound to correct minor unevenness. Significant subfloor issues are identified during the pre-installation survey and factored into your project plan and estimate.

Yes. Herringbone and other pattern installations require more cutting, more precise alignment, and more time — and therefore carry a higher installation cost than standard straight installation. Yes — we offer installation-only services for customer-supplied flooring. Please note that our workmanship warranty covers installation quality only for customer-supplied products. We are not responsible for product defects in flooring we did not supply.
